WATANABE/MERMELSTEIN RESIDENCE

Millbrae, California

The central element of our design for this oak shaded backyard was a circular space formed by an amphitheater of loosely arranged Herculean blocks. They retain the steep slope behind them and have the appearance of erupting from the earth. This arrangement was intended as a counterpoint to the more static forms of the existing house. The blocks provide numerous possibilities for sitting, reclining, climbing, and placement of objects. The composition could be interpreted as a primal gathering circle of mysterious purpose, either re-emerging from an ancient past or in the process of being swallowed and buried by the advancing hillside and forest.
