WALTER HAAS PARK
San Francisco, CaliforniaHighlighting panoramic views of San Francisco, contrasting the city grid with undulating organic forms, and developing an open and unified spatial arrangement were major design goals of this complete renovation of an existing city park. We worked in cooperation with the San Francisco Department of Recreation and Parks and a neighborhood association formed specifically to address the park’s future. We facilitated numerous public workshops and meetings to build a vision for the space and address concerns of play quality, multiple user groups, safety, universal access, and viewsheds. After reaching consensus, we designed a park featuring a central large rolling expanse of lawn for strolling and informal play encircled by a paved pathway and seating areas which capitalize on views of the city’s downtown skyline. The park includes a full basketball court and a playground furnished with a wide range of universally accessible play structures, connected with a playful configuration of paths. A sloping bowl-shaped lawn and garden with a curving path connects the two major elevations of the park, and an off-leash dog play area with seating commands another sweeping view of the city.
