| The Green Schoolyard Program is a small part of the SFUSD Bond Program that offers funding to schools to design and implement an increase in green spaces within the schoolyards. The collaboration between 450 Architects, Studio Green and the Green Schoolyard Bond Program brings together the expertise to design and improve three school campuses; James Denman Middle School, Balboa High School, and Thurgood Marshall Academic High School. The goal is to provide increased opportunities to develop new ways of learning through site specific garden installations. With the design of new planting areas, a solar powered irrigation controller, and the means of learning the lines will begin to blur between the teachings within the classroom and out in the landscape. Students will now have the opportunity to be taught and learn from interactive participation about the environment and sustainability. These three projects highlight the removal of asphalt in localized areas, install raised planters and seating to accommodate newly planted trees to provide shade and repose for students, and implement more water efficient ways of irrigating. |
